Elena, the main character in Divided Heart, started her life in my novel as a cop who had just been promoted to undercover detective. As I edit, I am realizing that major parts of the plot simply don’t fit with her as a cop. There are things she would, best case, be written up an suspended for, worst case fired. These are things I can’t chang without changing the whole story.
I realized Elena is much better suited for being a private investigator. The story will work better, but there are some major changes I need to make to support this. There must be an outside client hiring Elena. And parts of her personality are going to change as well. Nothing major, but there will be small differences.
I’ve sent about a third of the book to my online critique group and finished making changes based on their feedback. Now I have to go back through those chapters and make more changes. That won’t take as long though. The hardest part will be plotting out the additions to the storyline. Motives will be slightly different. Some relationships will have a different dynamic.
I look forward to making these changes. It will be fun to see how the novel ends up. That’s the best part of writing – discovering what my characters will do and who they are along the journey.
