A question commonly asked in the NaNoWriMo forums is some variation of, “Do you write when it’s not November?” I don’t understand this question. I’m not trying to belittle or insult any of the people who ask this question, but I truly don’t understand it. So many people who do NaNo talk about how much they love it, how much they love writing, and I completely relate to all that. But then they don’t write the other 11 months of the year. It’s almost as if, for some inconceivable reason, they aren’t allowed to write the rest of the year. This baffles me.
I understand the concept of only writing when you are inspired, or when you feel like it. But surely November isn’t the only time these writers “feel like writing” or are inspired. Some may write a little bit here and there throughout the year, but not much.
If you love writing, why do it only one month out of the year? If you don’t love writing, why participate in NaNoWriMo, a challenge the pretty much precludes everything other than writing (and work or school) for an entire month?
Since I rediscovered my love of writing almost 5 years ago, I have written on a pretty regular basis. Some periods of time I write more than others (I include editing in this, because it is part of the process.) This past year there was a long stretch where I wrote almost nothing at all. But overall, I always write. I don’t need a special occasion like NaNoWriMo to do it.
Maybe it’s because these people lack the motivation to write, and NaNo is that motivation? But again, I don’t understand how you can say you love writing if you don’t do it regularly.
If you are, or know someone who is, one of these people who only write for NaNo, I’d love for you to explain it to me. I really want to understand this, because I can’t fathom only writing one month out of the year.
And now, the semi-weekly update on my writing goals.
-I missed Wednesday on the daily pages for The Artist’s Way due to a chiropractor appointment after work and going to see Zappa Plays Zappa, then being exhausted when I got home from the concert. Other than that I’m on track. I need to find my copy of the book so I can start working through the exercises. I’m pretty sure it’s in one of the 11 boxes of books waiting for a book shelf on which to be displayed, I just haven’t felt like going through them all yet. If it’s not in there, then it’s lost.
