A few weeks ago Holly Lisle had a sale on her Create a Character Clinic. I love her stuff, so couldn’t resist. I’ve worked through about a third of it so far, building the main character for the novel I’m going to write for National Novel Writing Month this November. In the past, I’ve downloaded character sheets with a list of questions (what color is the character’s hair/eyes? where does the character work? etc etc) but never really found them of much use. This extensive character building workshop, however, has been immensely helpful. It asks questions like “Where does your character work AND WHY?” It’s the “and why” that is so helpful. All the why questions have really got me thinking, and I’ve already developed a ton of information that I previously had no idea about my character. It’s even helped me develop a bit of the plot in my head.
I can’t believe it’s almost October. That means only 1 more month of planning before NaNoWriMo. Which is funny, considering I’ve never actually planned a novel before. Research, sure, but planning…nope. I’m trying something different this time though. I hope to finish working through the character clinic before November.
Create a Character Clinic is on sale for $7.99 through the end of September. Go buy it. It will be some of the best 8 bucks you’ve spent in a while.
