EEK!!! is about all I can say. A few months ago I was thinking, “I have plenty of time to think about NaNo.” Well, it’s almost October, and now I only have a month to think about it. I guess I knew that somewhere in the recesses of my subconscious, but it’s not REAL until Oct. 1 hits. I realized today that Oct. 1 is when the NaNo website is taken down and refreshed for the new year NaNo. At least, that’s how it worked last year. I’m assuming it will be the same this year. I remember waiting up until, oh, at least midnight for the site to come back online, but they were having technical difficulties, and I finally had to go to sleep so I could wake up for work the next day. I dreamed about the website that night. I dreamed I woke up the next morning, and the website still wasn’t up. I think that qualifies as a nightmare!
I’ll still have to work the day after the relaunch this year (Oct. 1 is next Friday), so hopefully they won’t have difficulties. And Nov. 1 is a Monday this year, so I’ll be super tired at work the next day. But I WILL still go to the midnight kickoff party. Maybe I’ll take the day off work…Doubtful, as I have some crazy deadlines I’m working to.
Anyway. I guess I really better start planning. I’m pretty sure the novel will be book 3 in my urban fantasy series. Which means I should probably finish book 2. I’ve worked on it some tonight…combining the 2 versions, and started adding new scenes. I still have a lot of editing to do from when I changed Elena to be a PI instead of a cop, but the basics are there. Even if I don’t completely finish a draft of it by Nov. 1, I’ll have enough written, and the rest planned, that I’ll be able to start book 3. It’s the major plot points I need fleshed out, not the actual scenes. Now if only I had a plot for book 3…I have a very vague idea, but I think it’s more of an idea than I had when I started book 1, so I’ll just start writing and see where my characters take me. At least I have the main characters now, whereas for book 1 I didn’t even have that.
I’ve been looking for new music the past several months – not for NaNo, just because, but a lot of it will work for NaNo. So now I just need to compile it all into a playlist. This is probably the least important part, however. I could just put Emilie Autumn’s “Unlaced” on endless loop and would be happy. As long as I have some kind of lyricless or non-English-lyric background music, I’ll be fine. Variety is nice, but honestly, when I really get into the writing, I barely hear the music anyway. I’m still always open to suggestions, so send them my way if you have any. (You can see my favorites here for an idea of what I like.)
I do want to find the perfect word count calendar. But that will come as the refreshed NaNo forums are up.
I also need to stock up on tea. I’ve taken quite a liking to tea, sometimes even more than coffee, since last year. I have enough coffee to keep me going, but tea, I need more. Earl Grey and Irish Breakfast are my current favorites. Good, strong teas. And green tea when I want something lighter. And Tazo “Calm” for just before bed, because it has no caffeine. As I’m trying to save money and eat healthier, I will stick with tea for write-ins, and save the chai tea lattes for when I reach certain word count goals as a reward.
The final task will be to think up character names. Maybe some characters as well, but my characters usually come to me as I’m writing. I don’t preplan them. But names…I need a good list of names from which to choose. There are two characters whose names I need to change because they are too similar to other characters. Elly and Elena, Julia and Julian. Elly is a minor character, so changing her name isn’t a big deal. But Julia is an important secondary character, as is Julian. I think I’ll be changing Julia’s name, though. Just don’t know to what yet. So I must work on my list of names.
I’m getting excited about writing again. JulNoWriMo was a bust, and it took me a long time to recover from that. But my vacation gave me the time and peace I needed to look at Ravaged Heart again, and I’m now ready to finish the draft.
I was away from the forums for a while, so sadly missed the chance to apply for co-ML position, but I’ll be unofficially helping St. Louis’ fearless ML (who is also named Jen.) This weekend I’m going to check out a new-to-me coffeehouse to see if it would be an ideal meeting place for the kickoff party, or write-ins. I can’t wait for Saturday to check it out! (Partly because the weather will be nice and I’m going to ride.)
Yes, the nearing of NaNo is exactly what I needed to get my writing bones back in action.
